doctored ape

on the seventh visit to the garden
(7 – prime/magic measure)
they saw it still heaving
struggling life and death
and thought it good

but not cutting edge

time to up the ante one said
an experiment in acceleration
let’s sophisticate the language
and posture refine appearance
give ’em higher thinking

not one of the big cats said the other
or the balance’ll be screwed again
nor a bird too much of a threat
remember what happened with Project #13

a monkey then?

naughty but with potential
and easy to work on
let’s go for a hybrid

like those funny guys on-?

with more restrictions
if we give ’em verbal reasoning
working memory and chunking
they’ll craft beliefs practise deceit
set up systems of control and barter
hunt in packs discriminate
on grounds of race and colour
and kill for pleasure

they’re already doing much of that
stones sticks traps
they know about camouflage and venom
we’ll just be adding spice
and look on the bright side
they might scratch on walls and paint
cook and compose symphonies
arty-farty stuff great gas

what happens when they work out
radio dna and fission?

it’ll take ’em thousands of their planet years
and when they do they’ll probably self-destruct
they won’t be smart enough to-

what if they find out what we did
and come after us?

we’ll monitor and make sure they can’t
if we see they’re about to find a way
past the gate we’ll fire a bigger rock
than the last and wipe ’em out
it’s how we get rid of the stuck-up

what about the innocent?

rather late for conscience but sweet
look it’s the only viable habitat
left in this little solar system
remote as far as they can tell
and chances are they’ll always be slow
it’ll take ’em forever to realise light’s
not the fastest thing in the universe
as for the innocent

  1. although the true meaning lurks in the heart of the poet. as i read i gathered many lessons among the well crafted words and the encrypted pictures that prophecies the inevitable end.

    beautiful poem John
    loved reading it
    my best to you

  2. Genesis and Armageddon creation and evolution, the products appear to be the same. We are children with Spartan results beyond species survival as we attempt perennially to annihilate each other in the name of some ism. I appreciate the multiple facets of your philosophical views and the glamour of your penning skills. Entertain me often John, I enjoy it.
    Ever your friend Jon Michael
